Political Party Affiliation Change Deadline Nears
The last day to change political party affiliation and to be eligible to vote in that political party affiliation’s upcoming 2018 Primary Election is December 31, 2017. Kentucky law requires voters to turn in political party changes by December 31 of the previous year.
The Jefferson County Clerk’s Offices and Motor Vehicle branches will be closed on Sunday, December 31st for scheduled (AVIS) Automobile Vehicle Information System Outages. The Election Center located at 701 W. Ormsby Avenue, Suite 301 will be open on Sunday, December 31st for the convenience of Jefferson County residents from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The Motor Vehicle branches will accept voter registration cards on December 28th from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Any voter registration cards that are mailed must be postmarked by December 31, 2017 to be accepted.
The law does not stop anyone from changing their party from January 1 to the date of the Primary Election. There is just a limitation that if they do, they are only allowed a nonpartisan ballot. They can change their party any time during the year if they so choose.
